Detailed report of the event:
The P.G Department of English celebrated Women's Equality Day by organising a lecture on 23rd August for II BA students. The resource person was Dr. N. Bindu, Assistant Professor, Presidency College, Chennai. She was introduced by Aswini from II BA English. Dr. Bindu's talk was titled "Why Feminism?: An Overview" eloquently outlined the phases of the feminist movement. The Resource Person explained the differences between the term 'man' and 'male' and 'woman' and 'female' respectively. Later, she highlighted the prevalence of gender crimes, thereby emphasising the necessity of feminism. The vote of thanks was delivered by Supriya from II BA English.
Outcomes of the event:
The lecture was an eye-opener for the students. Girl students were able to relate to the examples that the Resource Person quoted. By the end of the lecture students gained clarity of the difference between sex and gender. They understood that a feminist does not necessarily have to be a woman; a man too can have feminist thoughts.
