A seminar on Film Appreciation

     Event Report

    The PG Department of English of Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College (Autonomous), Chennai, organized a seminar on Film Appreciation for the students of BA English on 25th July 2025 at the Vallabhacharya Auditorium. The program commenced at 9:00 AM with the august presence of faculty, dignitaries, and students. The seminar was graced by the distinguished speaker Dr. M. Kamalakkannan, Associate Professor, Department of English, Presidency College, Chennai. Known for his expertise in literary and cultural studies, Dr. Kamalakkannan provided deep insights into the world of cinema, explaining how films serve not merely as entertainment but as a powerful medium of storytelling, cultural reflection, and artistic expression. In his address, Dr. Kamalakkannan highlighted the fundamental aspects of film appreciation, focusing on the importance of analyzing elements such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing, sound, and narrative techniques. He elaborated on the close relationship between literature and cinema, particularly discussing how literary works adapted into films can be studied for both their artistic merit and cultural relevance. By presenting examples and case studies, he encouraged students to critically engage with films in the same way they study literary texts, thus broadening their perspective on art and society. The session was highly interactive, with students enthusiastically participating in discussions and raising thoughtful questions. Their curiosity ranged from the role of cinema in shaping societal values to the challenges of film adaptations of classic works. The lively exchange created an enriching learning atmosphere, ensuring that students not only absorbed knowledge but also actively applied critical thinking skills during the session. The event was made possible under the guidance of Dr. J. Praveen Prabhu, Head of the Department, and the support of Capt. Dr. S. Santhosh Baboo, Principal of the College, along with Shri. Ashok Kumar Mundhra, Secretary. The smooth coordination of the seminar was ensured by Mr. G.M. Prem Kumar, Assistant Professor and Faculty Coordinator, assisted by the Student Coordinators, Devadarshini and Jeevika, whose dedicated efforts contributed significantly to the success of the event. The seminar concluded with a formal vote of thanks, acknowledging the resource person’s enlightening talk, the active involvement of students, and the support of the faculty. 

Outcome of Event: 

1. Students learned to view films beyond entertainment, analyzing them as cultural and literary texts. 

2. Participants understood how cinematic adaptations of literary works can provide deeper insights into both mediums 

3. The seminar helped students appreciate films as reflections of society, history, and human values.
