Curtain Raiser Programme Chennai International Book Fair 2026

The PG Department of English, Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College (Autonomous), in collaboration with the Government of Tamil Nadu, organised a Curtain Raiser Programme for the Chennai International Book Fair 2026 on 3 January 2026 at 11.30 a.m. in the Dwaraka Auditorium. The programme was conceived as a literary prelude to the forthcoming international book fair, with the aim of nurturing reading habits, celebrating literary culture, and sensitising students to the global significance of books and publishing.
The event began with a warm welcome and set a reflective tone befitting a literary gathering. The presence of eminent dignitaries from the literary and library fraternity added depth and distinction to the programme. Mr. Manushya Puthiran, Chairman, Chennai Local Library Authority, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Dr. Kavitha, District Library Officer, Government of Tamil Nadu, graced the occasion and highlighted the crucial role of public libraries and book fairs in sustaining democratic access to knowledge and fostering a culture of reading among the youth.
The highlight of the programme was the special address by Mr. Veyil, noted poet, whose interaction with the audience was both thought-provoking and inspiring. Through his reflections on poetry, lived experience, and social consciousness, he emphasised the enduring relevance of literature in contemporary times. His address resonated strongly with students, encouraging them to view poetry not merely as a literary form but as a powerful medium of expression, resistance, and empathy.
The programme was conducted under the guidance and support of the college administration. Capt. Dr. S. Santhosh Baboo, Principal, and Shri. Ashok Kumar Mundra, Secretary, extended their encouragement for initiatives that bridge academia and public literary culture. Dr. J. Praveen Prabhu, Head of the PG Department of English, played a key role in shaping the academic vision of the event and reinforcing the department’s commitment to literary engagement beyond the classroom.
The event was efficiently coordinated by Mr. G. M. Prem Kumar, Assistant Professor, PG Department of English, whose meticulous planning ensured smooth organisation and active student participation. Faculty members, students, and invited guests attended the programme in large numbers, making it a vibrant and interactive literary gathering.
